STORYLINE:

Talks on a new constitution for Syria resumed this week in Geneva, with the UN Special Envoy for the country, Mr. Geir O. Pedersen, mediating the process.

On Monday, participants arrived to the first meeting of the seventh session of the Small Body of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.

The Small body is represented by 15 members nominated by the government, 15 members nominated by the opposition and 15 members of the civil society group, the so called Middle Third.

The Small Body of the Constitutional Committee will convene in Geneva from 21 March to 25 March and will be meeting in closed sessions and off-site.

Back in October, the sixth round of discussions between the representatives from President Bashar al-Assad's government, the opposition, and civil society, ended with no agreement on how to move things forward.

The Syrian Constitutional Committee was created in September 2019 and first agreed a month later.
