STORYLINE:

Since conflict began in November 2020, millions of people have been displaced from their homes or live amidst ongoing conflict and insecurity in northern Ethiopia, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).

The Agency said civilians, including refugees and internally displaced persons, are in dire need and appealed to donors to help bring vital protection and assistance to people displaced by the conflict.

UNHCR said the security situation in the region remains complex, hindering effective and sustained delivery of lifesaving assistance to the most affected populations.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mamadou Dian Balde, Representative in Ethiopia, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR):
“What I see is a lot of suffering, a lot of stories of people who have been separated from their families, a lot of stories of people who want to go back and resume their normal lives.”

Despite challenges with access, UNHCR said it is on the ground providing emergency assistance.

SOUNDBITE (Tigrinya) displaced woman:
“I had only one blanket for my family of five. Now, I’m happy that you have given a blanket to each member of the family. With the jerry cans you have given us, we can store and drink clean water. We are so happy you are addressing our problems.”

The refugee agency said over 60 protection desks have been set up in northern Ethiopia, working with volunteers and other aid workers to provide support and counselling to thousands of displaced people.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mabret, Volunteer Social Worker:
“As a social worker, my work is to protect people. Maybe if they need this hospital, maybe if they need food. Maybe if they need anything to help them.”

UNHCR said its operation in Ethiopia is desperately underfunded and needs more support to reach people affected by conflict and help them rebuild their lives.

The Agency’s Ethiopia operation has to date only received nine percent of the countrywide requirements of USD 335 million for the year.
