STORYLINE:
In Lebanon, displaced families and their host communities barely coping with an economic crisis are now struggling to survive a record harsh winter, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).

Lebanon has seen one of the harshest winters in a decade, with snow reaching areas that had not witnessed snow in ten years, like the district of Byblos. Temperatures have fallen below zero leaving many refugees and Lebanese families struggling to fight the cold. Over the past week, almost 4,000 refugee families were severely affected by the storms and need assistance.

UNHCR and partners have continued to provide regular winter assistance in addition to emergency assistance (shelter kits, thermal blankets, hygiene kits, etc.) to support families during this critical week. However, access to specific communities and phone lines has been difficult given that roads were cut off by heavy snow and telephone networks are non-functional in some areas.

Some of the refugees UNHCR has spoken to said they are struggling with the cold, many having to shovel the snow from their roofs and doors, some dealing with frozen water in the pipes and with a lack of fuel and heating in their houses to stay warm.

Lebanon is facing a deep economic crisis coupled with high COVID-19 numbers.

UNHCR has stepped-up support to provide winter assistance to refugee and Lebanese families, so far reaching over 260,000 with winter assistance.
