STORYLINE:

A large group of asylum-seekers, refugees and migrants has been stranded near the border between Belarus and Poland in the vicinity of the Bruzgi (Belarus) / Kuznica (Poland) official border crossing point since 8 November. UNHCR, and its partner the Belarus Red Cross Society, are there providing emergency aid.

On 8 November, a large group of refugees and migrants was reported in Belarus moving toward the Bruzgi (Belarus) / Kuznica (Poland) official border crossing point and settled in a makeshift camp under unsustainable and unsafe conditions in freezing temperatures, without adequate access to shelter, food or water. After several days they were relocated in a warehouse or so-called logistics centre in the vicinity of the border on the Belarusian side. This group included women and children and originated from various countries, mainly from Kurdistan region of Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic and other countries.

UNHCR has been calling to move refugees and migrants to safer and adequate reception locations, away from the border area, to prevent loss of life and find solutions for these persons.

In addition to this large group, there are other smaller groups of asylum-seekers, refugees and migrants who have been attempting to cross from Belarus into Latvia, Lithuania and Poland through the green border since June 2021. Their number remains unknown. As reported by open sources, since September, at least thirteen people have lost their lives in the border areas, mostly due to hypothermia.
