STORYLINE:
For many years the Sama Bajau community have made their livelihood fishing along the coasts of Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Known as itinerant seafarers, their lifestyle has hampered their access to services like education, healthcare, and livelihood assistance.
But UNHCR volunteers like Almalyn Akmad are going door to door to register people, and help them get their birth certificates.

“As a volunteer, I help them because most Sama Bajau can’t read or write. Some are also scared of speaking with the civil registrar staff, so I assist them as an interpreter.”
Bernalita Bensali is from the Sama Bajau community.

“The birth certificate is important because it will help. The teacher asked us for a photocopy and we have to take it to the school. It will help Bermaisa get an education.”
She said that it is her dream for her daughter Bermaisa Bensali to be able to learn how to read and write.
