3. SOUNDBITE (English) Abdulla Shahid, President, United Nations General Assembly:
“Only 18 of the 194 speakers this year were women. That is about 9.2 percent. As the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic continue, it is becoming increasingly clear that if we want to build back better, a stronger gender lens on response and recovery is vital. I am pleased to announce that during my Presidency I will be reconstituting the President of the General Assembly’s Advisory Board on Gender Equality. If we don’t take the necessary steps to turn this tide, we will need 135.6 years, according to recent studies, to close the gender gap.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Abdulla Shahid, President, United Nations General Assembly:
“Multilateralism is the only way to address common challenges and, one of them, COVID-19 is not over yet. In fact, it will not be over until we achieve universal vaccination. In January next year I plan to convene a High-Level meeting to take stock of the vaccine situation. I personally believe, we have the capacity to immunize the entire world.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Abdulla Shahid, President, United Nations General Assembly:
“I come from the Maldives, a small island state. We are right at the front of this issue of climate change. For us, it is an existential issue. For us, there’s not enough being done. Because we don’t have high ground, we don’t have anywhere to go. So, for a Maldivian presidency, we will continue to highlight the fact that there is the possibility that more can be done.”
