5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Faysal Al Mekdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Syrian Arab Republic:
“Syria has seriously and positively engaged with the meetings under the Astana format with the hopes that this would have a positive result on the fight against terrorism and the restoration of security and stability in Syria. However, the Turkish regime continues to provide one indication after the other that it is not committed to the outcomes of Astana and the Sochi understandings related to Idlib in the northwest of Syria. In addition, it continues to support and protect terrorist organizations located there.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Faysal Al Mekdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Syrian Arab Republic:
“Therefore, the occupation of Syrian land by Turkish and American forces under false pretexts, and their looting of the natural resources of the Syrian people, should end immediately without any preconditions. Just as Syria managed to wipe out terrorists from the majority of its territories., it will work to end this occupation with the same resolve and determination, using all possible means under international law. Syrian history stands witness that no occupation can last, and it will end sooner or later."

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Faysal Al Mekdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Syrian Arab Republic:
"We warn the few seeking secession in northeast Syria against harboring such illusions that are rejected by the Syrian people because by pursuing such ends, they are placing themselves in the category of those plotting against Syria's unity, both in land and people; and they will be dealt with accordingly. They must wake up from their delusions and learn from the examples before them and close to them that betting on foreign powers and using an occupier against their own people is a failed wager and can bring nothing but humiliation to them and harm and detriment to their country and people, if they truly consider themselves a part of this people.”

STORYLINE:

Syrian Foreign Minister Faysal Al Mekdad warned “the few seeking secession” in the northeast against “harboring such illusions that are rejected by the Syrian people because by pursuing such ends, they are placing themselves in the category of those plotting against Syria's unity, both in land and people; and they will be dealt with accordingly.”

In his address to the General Assembly today (27 Sep), Al Mekdad said his country was one of the most affected by terrorism which were supported militarily, financially, and logistically by countries known to sponsor terrorism.

He said, “We reaffirm that the continuation of this noble battle - until the cleansing of the entire Syrian territory from the sullying of terrorism and the restoration of state authority, security and stability to all of Syria - is a constitutional and national duty and a non-negotiable right. No foreign aggression or pressure, and no lies or propaganda campaigns can deter us from it.”

The Syrian Foreign Minister said his government “seriously and positively” engaged with the meetings under the Astana format with the hopes that this would have a positive result on the fight against terrorism and the restoration of security and stability in Syria. However, he said, “the Turkish regime continues to provide one indication after the other that it is not committed to the outcomes of Astana and the Sochi understandings related to Idlib in the northwest of Syria. In addition, it continues to support and protect terrorist organizations located there.”

Al Mekdad reaffirmed his country’s position that any foreign presence on Syrian territory without the government authorization is a grave violation of international law. He added, “Therefore, the occupation of Syrian land by Turkish and American forces under false pretexts, and their looting of the natural resources of the Syrian people, should end immediately without any preconditions. Just as Syria managed to wipe out terrorists from the majority of its territories., it will work to end this occupation with the same resolve and determination, using all possible means under international law. Syrian history stands witness that no occupation can last, and it will end sooner or later."

The Foreign Minister warned “the few seeking secession in northeast Syria against harboring such illusions that are rejected by the Syrian people because by pursuing such ends, they are placing themselves in the category of those plotting against Syria's unity, both in land and people; and they will be dealt with accordingly.” He said, “They must wake up from their delusions and learn from the examples before them and close to them that betting on foreign powers and using an occupier against their own people is a failed wager and can bring nothing but humiliation to them and harm and detriment to their country and people, if they truly consider themselves a part of this people.”

Al Mekdad said Syria’s doors are “wide open to all Syrian refugees for their voluntary and safe return to their country.” He added that relevant Syrian institutions are working “continuously and tirelessly to achieve this,” however regrettably this effort continues to collide with the exploitation of the pain and suffering of Syrians by some who wish to employ it for purposes far from the interests of the Syrian people.

The Syrian Foreign Minister stressed the need to strengthen dialogue and understanding among countries, on the basis of mutual respect, equality, and respect for international law. He said some countries need to recognize that the world is deeply interconnected, and no country could achieve its interests and guarantee its security at the expense of other countries.
