“The Taliban have announced that the current structure is temporary. So, what's most important once again, is to ensure that the promises that they have proclaimed publicly, for those promises to be kept. And for us that is the top priority - as mentioned, the inadmissibility of the spread of extremism is spilling over into neighboring countries and of course, it is absolutely unacceptable for the terrorist threat to persist on Afghan soil. So, they announced that they're determined to fight ISIS and other terrorist groups, and we will do everything possible to support them to ensure that.”

STORYLINE:

“The question of international recognition of the Taliban at the present juncture is not on the table,” the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference in New York on the sidelines of the General Assembly on Saturday (25 Sep).

“We will proceed from that premise if and when we receive a request for the appointment of a new ambassador” by the Taliban, Lavrov said.

Commenting on the current security situation in Afghanistan, he said “unfortunately, the hasty withdrawal, let's call it that, of US and other NATO troops was carried out without any consideration of the consequences and as you know the consequences are that there are many weapons left in Afghanistan.”

“We all need to make sure that these weapons are not to be used for destructive purposes,” Lavrov said.

For Russia, the top priority is preventing “the spread of extremism is spilling over into neighboring countries,” and “of course, it is absolutely unacceptable for the terrorist threat to persist on Afghan soil,” the Foreign Minister said.

“They [the Taliban] announced that they're determined to fight ISIS and other terrorist groups, and we will do everything possible to support them to ensure that,” he said.

Asked about the progress on the Iran nuclear deal, Lavrov said “Iran isn't doing anything that would be prohibited. Iran is complying with the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Additional Protocol to the agreements and guarantees. It is not complying currently with most of the obligations under the JCPOA, which is simply not currently enforced because the US exited that agreement, and the conversation now is about fully restoring that agreement, following which Iran would have no justification to make any exceptions to the obligations.”
