2. Wide shot, Salih at podium in General Assembly Hall
3. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Barham Salih, President, Iraq:
“I call on our friends in the international community to assist us in finding and restoring the money smuggled out of Iraq due to corruption. This will be a decisive step in deterring corruption. We renew our call for the formation of an international alliance to combat corruption and to restore pillaged funds, similar to the international alliance against terrorism. Terrorism cannot be eliminated unless corruption is eliminated, as it constitutes a political economy for violence and terrorism. Corruption and terrorism are in fact linked, inseparable, mutually reinforcing and work steadfastly in tandem.”
4. Med shot, Iraqi delegation
5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Barham Salih, President, Iraq:
“The Iraqi Government has organized the Baghdad Conference for cooperation and partnership in order to underscore that Iraq, which was a synonym for conflict, is now a meeting point for the interest of the peoples and states of the region. The success of peace efforts cannot be seen without Iraq; an Iraq that is safe, stable, and fully sovereign and whose crucial role in the region will be re-established. This requires regional and international support as well as a stop to the competitive behavior and conflicts of others being played out on our land.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Barham Salih, President, Iraq:
“Next month, Iraq will be facing a key national event, namely the holding of early elections as a response to a popular movement and a large-scale national consensus on the need to bring about crucial reforms and to establish a new social and political contract that will correct the failings of the previous system and ensure good governance. These elections will be decisive and will have an impact on Iraq and perhaps the entire region.”

STORYLINE:

Iraqi President Barham Salih said the early elections set to take place in his country next month will be “decisive and will have an impact on Iraq and perhaps the entire region.”

Addressing the UN General Assembly today (23 Sep), Salih said Iraq was able to overcome the hardship it has faced over the past 40 years, including blockade, oppression, massacres, mass graves, the use of chemical weapons, and terrorism. He said his country, with the help of its partners, was able to defeat Da’esh and protect the world from its crimes, adding that the national security forces were still carrying out operations to eliminate what is left of terror cells which threaten the security of Iraq, the region, and the world.

The Iraqi President noted that corruption also threatens peace and security around the world, which is why his country is considering countering it a national battle that must be won. He called on Iraq’s friends in the international community to assist in “finding and restoring the money smuggled out of Iraq due to corruption. This will be a decisive step in deterring corruption.” He renewed Iraq’s call for the formation of an international alliance to combat corruption and to restore pillaged funds, similar to the international alliance against terrorism.

Salih said, “Terrorism cannot be eliminated unless corruption is eliminated, as it constitutes a political economy for violence and terrorism. Corruption and terrorism are in fact linked, inseparable, mutually reinforcing and work steadfastly in tandem.”

Salih said Iraq has adopted a balanced approach to the region which focuses on supporting dialogue, easing tensions, and building partnerships. He added, “The Iraqi Government has organized the Baghdad Conference for cooperation and partnership in order to underscore that Iraq, which was a synonym for conflict, is now a meeting point for the interest of the peoples and states of the region. The success of peace efforts cannot be seen without Iraq; an Iraq that is safe, stable, and fully sovereign and whose crucial role in the region will be re-established. This requires regional and international support as well as a stop to the competitive behavior and conflicts of others being played out on our land.”

The Iraqi President said his country would be facing a “key national event” next month, “namely the holding of early elections as a response to a popular movement and a large-scale national consensus on the need to bring about crucial reforms and to establish a new social and political contract that will correct the failings of the previous system and ensure good governance.”

He said these elections will be “decisive and will have an impact on Iraq and perhaps the entire region,” and stressed that his government has made restoring the trust of Iraqi citizens in the election process an absolute priority.
