STORYLINE:

As part of its observances for the International Day of Peace, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) teamed up with the Intercommunity Peace Initiative and the South Sudan Football Association to host friendly football matches in a bid to bring together young people from different communities in the spirit of peace and unity.

SOUNDBITE (English) Geeta Pious, Head of Field Office, Central Equatoria, United Nations in South Sudan UNMISS:
“At UNMISS, we work together to fill the momentum to fully implement the peace agreement so as to allow South Sudanese to find the peace they deserve. The football game today is part of that commitment.”

The event was attended by South Sudanese Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Albino Bol Dhieu, who thanked UNMISS and partners for their support to young South Sudanese.

The Minister pledged his commitment to ensuring greater facilities and funding to support athletes from the world’s youngest nation.

The vibrant tournament included matches for both young men and women and served a dual purpose: It harnessed the power of sport to unite young people and brought together all communities in a spirit of joy and a shared sense of national identity.

SOUNDBITE (English) Geeta Pious, Head of Field Office, Central Equatoria, United Nations in South Sudan UNMISS:

“We know that the South Sudanese love football and, indeed, football is used the world over to build peace. The young community can use their energy and build team spirit.”

This event was part of a ‘Sport for Peace’ tournament jointly launched by UNMISS, Intercommunity Peace Initiative and the South Sudan Football Association earlier this year.

21 September is annually commemorated as the International Day of Peace.
