STORYLINE:

The World Health Organization (WHO)’s Logistics Hub in Dubai has completed its single largest shipment yet, airlifting 85 metric tonnes of life-saving health supplies to Ethiopia on Friday (10 Sep).

The supplies, including essential medicines, trauma and emergency surgery kits, infusions, consumables and cholera kits, were flown by a charter flight donated by the United Arab Emirates that landed in Addis Ababa on 10 September and will address the urgent needs of more than 150 000 people in Ethiopia.

SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Blanchard, WHO Emergency Operations Team Lead, Dubai Logistics Hub:
“Today, we are distributing over 85 tons of medical supplies, including essential medicines and cholera kits to Ethiopia valued at over a half a million dollars.”

The shipment wrapped up a historic week for the Logistics Hub. Dispatching over four times the weekly average, the operation shipped more than 450 metric tonnes of health supplies valued at more than US$ 4.3 million to support the cholera outbreak response in Nigeria, critical shortages of medicines in Afghanistan, and the need for trauma and surgical supplies in Syria and Yemen.

Since 30 August, with support from Qatar, Pakistan and WFP, WHO has dispatched more than 131 metric tonnes of supplies to Afghanistan.

On September 14, the Hub dispatched 18 containers to Yemen, with a total of 104 metric tonnes of COVID-19 response supplies, personal protective equipment (PPE), and essential medicines for trauma and non-communicable diseases.

WHO’s Logistics Hub in Dubai plays an instrumental role in rapidly responding to health emergencies around the world. Since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hub has successfully delivered US$ 90 million worth of health supplies through 705 shipments to over 120 countries.

The United Arab Emirates and the International Humanitarian City provide immense and ongoing support to WHO's humanitarian operations. This strong collaboration continues to enhance WHO’s response to health emergencies of all types, including those arising from natural disasters, conflict, and outbreaks of infectious disease.
