STORYLINE:

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said it is rapidly delivering assistance to Afghanistan through neighbouring Pakistan. The Agency noted that, by allowing convoys carrying vital supplies to go overland and through its borders, Pakistan is helping to ensure aid reaches the Afghan people quickly.

Afghans make up one of the largest refugee populations worldwide. There are 2.6 million registered Afghan refugees in the world, of whom 2.2 million are registered in Iran and Pakistan alone. According to UNHCR, another 3.5 million people are internally displaced, having fled their homes searching for refuge within the country.

Over half a million have been displaced internally just this year - 80 percent of them are women and children. In light of the rapidly deteriorating security situation in 2021, UNHCR said the number of people displaced will likely continue to rise.

Afghanistan has suffered more than 40 years of conflict, natural disasters, drought, chronic poverty and food insecurity. Facing an ongoing humanitarian crisis, UNHCR said the resilience of refugees, internally displaced people and host communities is slowly reaching its limit.

UNHCR’s work in Afghanistan focuses on protecting the most vulnerable and assisting newly displaced Afghans with life-saving shelter, food, water and core relief items.

UNHCR said it has assisted over 300,000 displaced Afghans so far this year, but more support is needed.
