STORYLINE:

Parfait Hakizimana has endured tragedy, brutal violence and conflict. A refugee in Rwanda, he found strength, hope and courage through sports and his years of training as a professional taekwondo athlete took him all the way to the world stage - the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Parfait Hakizimana, 32, fled Burundi’s 2015 post-election violence, finding safety in Mahama refugee camp, in Rwanda, where he lives with his wife and daughter.

His life has been one of great difficulty – at age six, he was shot in the arm during an attack on his hometown and suffered a life-changing injury. His mother was killed in the brutal violence of that day. He spent close to two years in hospital recuperating.

Parfait’s story is one of hope and perseverance. Through sport and taekwondo, in particular, his spirits have been lifted, making him feel “safe” in a world of great uncertainty. He started a Taekwondo club in Mahama camp and coaches about 150 people, including children as young as six years old.

His goal is to win a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, where he will compete as part of the Refugee Paralympic Team, with five other refugee athletes.
