STORYLINE:

A total of 184 countries today (23 Jun) voted in favour of a resolution to demand the end of the United States economic blockade on Cuba, for the 29th year in a row, with the United States and Israel voting against.

In the meeting held in-person on Wednesday at UN headquarters in New York, three countries - Colombia, Ukraine, and Brazil - abstained.

With overwhelming backing from the international community, the resolution has been approved ever since 1992 when the General Assembly began to vote annually on the issue, with the sole exception of 2020, due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking before the vote, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, said it was “unacceptable that the US government for 28 years ignore the consecutive resolutions of this democratic and representative United Nations General Assembly.”

Rodríguez Parrilla said “Cuba’s complaint is that we want to be left alone. It is that we want to live without a blockade. That our commercial and financial ties with the rest of the world stop being persecuted.”

The diplomat said that the sanctions have made it harder for his country to acquire the medical equipment needed to develop COVID-19 vaccines as well as equipment for food production.

Meanwhile, Political Coordinator for the US Mission, Rodney Hunter, said during the vote that sanctions are “a legitimate way to achieve foreign policy, national security, and other national and international objectives, and the United States is not alone in this view or in this practice.”

He said, “the United States stands with the Cuban people and seeks to support their pursuit of freedom, prosperity, and a future of greater dignity.”
