I’m using the opportunity to talk virtually to people, but waiting, really for the end of the quarantine so that I can visit and engage in discussions with South Sudanese and hear from them the priorities that they are setting for the future.”

STORYLINE:

Newly appointed Special Representative for South Sudan and Head of UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom of South Africa as arrived in the world’s newest country Sunday (25 Apr)

SOUNDBITE (English) NICHOLAS HAYSOM, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS:
“First of all, in accordance with national protocol I shall quarantine. Upon his arrival at Juba International Airport, SRSG Haysom was received by his two Deputy Special Representatives, the Force Commander and Police Commissioner. He also met with the South Sudanese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Beatrice Wani Noah, before inspecting a Guard of Honour at the mission’s headquarters.

Once Mr. Haysom completes his mandatory 10-day quarantine in adherence with national COVID-19 protocols, he is looking forward to leading the peacekeeping mission’s ongoing support to establish a durable peace in this young nation so that all communities can look forward to a future of stability and prosperity.
