STORYLINE:

Cyprus has seen increased arrivals of refugees. It’s main reception centre is running more than 50 per cent above capacity. It hosts more than 1,600 people now.

UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Gillian Triggs visited Cyprus this week to meet with government interlocutors, NGOs and refugees themselves.

She listened to asylum-seekers at the First Reception Centre, to better understand and address the challenges they are facing.

Triggs said, “The conditions here in the camp are very overcrowded, people are very anxious, very angry, in some cases, and they're waiting to have their claims for asylum properly assessed according to due process."

UNHCR has been offering support to help authorities improve conditions. To ensure children are safely cared for and that asylum claims can be fairly and expediently processed.
