5. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, United Nations:
“The violence that we're seeing also due, I think, to the lack of political movement, and I think it is very important that those parties in Mali – and you know which is undergoing a transition; we know what happened last year – we're working with the national partners and the international partners to ensure smooth transition. But it is very important that all political actors, and some of the non-political armed actors, recommit to the peace agreement and the accord that had been signed for the sake of the people of Mali. And as you see, the security situation is not going in the right direction.”

STORYLINE:

The head of the UN mission in Mali (MINUSMA), Mahamat Annadif, expressed his “deep condolences” to the families of the victims and the Government of Mali following an attack on Malian forces near Gao, which left many injured and 33 killed, according to a spokesperson.

Speaking to reporters in New York today (17 Mar), UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the attack was carried out by “unknown combatants.” He said the MINUSMA was evacuating the injured Malian soldiers to their hospital in Gao, adding that the peacekeeping mission “continues to work with the authorities on what additional support it can provide.”

Responding to a question, Dujarric said the recent violence upsurge was also due “to the lack of political movement.” He said it was “very important that all political actors, and some of the non-political armed actors, recommit to the peace agreement and the accord that had been signed for the sake of the people of Mali,” and stressed that the security situation in the country “is not going in the right direction.”
