STORYLINE:

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres “strongly condemns today's attack” on a UN convoy in the eastern DR Congo, in which “unidentified armed combatants” killed three people including the Italian ambassador to the country.

Ambassador Luca Attanasio, his bodyguard and a national staff member of the World Food Programme (WFP) were killed in Kimbumba near Goma, North Kivu, when their convoy carrying a UN joint mission to one of the WFP programme sites was attacked by armed assailants.

“The Secretary General expresses his deep condolences to the families of the deceased, as well as the government of Italy and the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General at a press briefing in New York following the reports of attack.

Guterres “further expresses his solidarity with the World Food Program colleagues, and the entire United Nations team in the country,” and calls on the DRC government “to investigate swiftly this heinous targeting of a UN joint field mission, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

He reaffirms that the United Nations will continue to support the Congolese government and the people and their efforts to bring about peace and stability, especially in the east of the country,” Dujarric said.
