29 SEPTEMBER 2020, NEW YORK CITY

2. Zoom in, General Assembly
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister, Israel:
“For far too long the Palestinians wielded a veto on peace between Israel and the broader Arab world. For decades, all progress was halted and held hostage by completely unrealistic Palestinian demands.”
4. Med shot, Israeli delegate
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister, Israel:
“The expanding circle of peace will not make an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians less likely; it will make peace between Israelis and Palestinians more likely. Palestinian leaders will increasingly realize that they no longer have a veto over peace and progress in our region. And hopefully those leaders will ultimately decide to make peace with the Jewish state. And when that happens, Israel will be ready. I will be ready. And I'd be willing to negotiate on the basis of the Trump plan to end our conflict with the Palestinians once and for all."
6. Wide shot, GA
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister, Israel:
“First and foremost, I commend President Trump for withdrawing from the flawed nuclear deal with Iran. In 2015 I stood alone among world leaders in opposing the shameful nuclear deal that was made with Iran. I oppose it because the nuclear deal did not block Iran’s path to the bomb, it actually paved its way to it. I oppose it because the deals restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme were only temporary and were in no way tied to Iran’s change of behaviour.”
8. Med shot, GA presidency
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister, Israel:
“We who live in the Middle East are suffering the consequences of that irresponsible deal. A richer and emboldened Iran used the billions that flowed into its coffers to fuel its campaign of carnage and conquest across the region. Well, thankfully President Trump recognized the disastrous nuclear deal for what it was, and he acted. He restored US sanctions, forced countries to choose between doing business with America or doing business with Iran and took out the world’s most dangerous terrorist Qassem Suleimani.”

STORYLINE:

Hailing Israel’s recent peace agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, today (29 Sep) said, “for far too long the Palestinians wielded a veto on peace between Israel and the broader Arab world” and all progress was halted and held hostage by completely unrealistic Palestinian demands.”

In a video address to the General Assembly’s General Debate, Netanyahu said “the expanding circle of peace will not make an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians less likely; it will make peace between Israelis and Palestinians more likely.

Turning to relations with Iran, the Israeli Prime Minister commended US President Donald Trump for withdrawing “from the flawed nuclear deal with Iran.”

Netanyahu said,” I oppose it because the nuclear deal did not block Iran’s path to the bomb, it actually paved its way to it. I oppose it because the deals restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme were only temporary and were in no way tied to Iran’s change of behaviour.”

He said, “thankfully President Trump recognized the disastrous nuclear deal for what it was, and he acted. He restored US sanctions, forced countries to choose between doing business with America or doing business with Iran and took out the world’s most dangerous terrorist Qassem Suleimani.”

The Israeli Prime Minister also presented a map allegedly showing the site of a Hezbollah explosives depot near a gas company and a residential area in Lebanon and warned of the potential for another deadly explosion.

Netanyahu‘s comments were pre-recorded and aired in the General Assembly Hall as previously agreed by the General Assembly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the inability to gather world leaders in New York as customary, this year’s General Debate will witness the largest-ever participation of heads of states and government in UN history.
