STORYLINE:

Following a high-level event called “Financing the 2030 Agenda in the era of COVID-19 and Beyond” the UN Secretary-general Antonio Guterres told reporters “we must stop the virus in its tracks, respond, recover and strengthen our systems for the future.”

“Covid-19 is an acute crisis, but the problems that pandemic has exposed are chronic preexisting conditions,” Guterres said. “Ignoring these warning signs is an act of planetary self-harm.”

The virtual event, held Tuesday (29 Sep) on the sidelines of the UN General Debate, brought together the Heads of State and Government to consider the menu of policy options developed over the last four months with the ambition of supporting Member States in responding and recovering from the current global crisis.

The Co-Chairs of the event, Prime Ministers of Jamaica and Canada also spoke at the press conference via video link. Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness said, “we are convinced that the scale of the crisis warrants a broad-based and coordinated international effort.”

“UN is the most suitable global organization to spearhead this initiative, supported by institutions with existing mechanisms that can be quickly leveraged to deliver the results urgently needed by the world and particularly by developing world, Holness said.”

Announcing his country’s further USD 400 million investment in humanitarian and development funding to fight COVID-19, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said “from ensuring equitable access to vaccines to providing more time to distressed countries to make bilateral debt payments, including Caribbean and Small Island States, we are working on concrete actions that will build a more resilient world in the short medium and long term.”

“The global community must not give up on the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and the SDGs. In fact, we should seize this opportunity to do even more,” said Trudeau.
