2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, United Arab Emirates:
“With the signing of a historic peace accord with Israel, supported by American efforts, my country was able to freeze the annexation decision and opened broad prospects to achieve a comprehensive peace in the region. We hope this peace accord will provide the opportunity for the Palestinians and the Israelis to re-engage in negotiations to achieve peace. Our position towards supporting the Palestinian people and achieving the two-state solution is firm. We will work to ensure that the peace accord will open new intellectual horizons in the region and create a prosperous path for future generations who deserve a stable region and a better reality than wars and poverty.”

STORYLINE:

Emirati Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said with the signing of a “historic peace accord” with Israel, his country was able to freeze Israeli plans to annex parts of the West Bank.

In his statement to the General Assembly’s General Debate today (29 Sep), bin Zayed said the United Arab Emirates (UAE) remained firm in its call for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital in line with the relevant international resolutions. He said the UAE made persistent efforts using all available diplomatic channels to affirm its total rejection of the annexation of Palestinian territory and warned of its impact on all parties and on the security of the region.

The Foreign Minister said the peace accord between the UAE and Israel, supported by the United States, “opened broad prospects to achieve a comprehensive peace in the region.” He added, “We hope this peace accord will provide the opportunity for the Palestinians and the Israelis to re-engage in negotiations to achieve peace.”

Bin Zayed said the UAE’s position towards supporting the Palestinian people and achieving the two-state solution “is firm.” He said, “We will work to ensure that the peace accord will open new intellectual horizons in the region and create a prosperous path for future generations who deserve a stable region and a better reality than wars and poverty.”
