STORYLINE:

In a video address to the General Assembly’s General Debate, Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo today (24 Sep) said, “despite the challenges of COVID-19, we are still working hard to undertake inclusive national elections where the Somali people can determine their future.”

Farmaajo said, “we are firmly committed to promoting and instilling a strong tradition of democracy and accountable governance which serves the Somali people first and foremost.”

The Somalian President said, “we are also successfully defeating the menace of global terrorism with the efforts of our brave armed forces in collaboration with AMISOM and other international partners to make the world a safer place.”

Farmaajo’s comments were pre-recorded and aired in the General Assembly Hall as previously agreed by the General Assembly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the inability to gather world leaders in New York as customary, this year’s General Debate will witness the largest-ever participation of heads of states and government in UN history.
