Description
Globally, women represent a lower percentage of known cases of people facing the death penalty. However, women have been sentenced to death at higher rates for certain categories of crimes, such as those related to sexual morality.

Besides, women, especially from difficult socio-economic backgrounds, are the most significantly impacted by capital punishment for drug-related offenses, even if they usually operate at the lowest level of the drug trade. Drug trafficking and other non-lethal offenses do not meet the threshold of the “most serious crimes” under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which the use of the death penalty must be restricted pending its abolition.
