3.SOUNDBITE (English) Ashraf Ghani, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan:
“The United Nations that we need is an organization with authorities, capabilities, capitals and commitments to fulfill the principles and purpose of its Charter. We are facing multiple drivers of turmoil all in once, there is a preempted urgent priority for us – a ceasefire. An urgent end to the violence worth more than anything else to give us a chance to progress. I would like to take this opportunity to call on every member of the General Assembly and the P5 to help us archive the instate of a sovereign united and democratic Afghanistan in peace within itself and the region. Capable of preserving and expanding the gains of the last 19 years. A democratically stable and prosperous Afghanistan will be an example of how our collective will can overcome the turmoil and the uncertainty that define our world today.”

STORYLINE:

In a video message addressed to the High-level meeting to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nation today (21 Sep), President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani said that the UN we need is “an organization with authorities, capabilities, capitals and commitments to fulfill the principles and purpose of its Charter.”

The Afghan President Ghani said, “we are facing multiple drivers of turmoil all in once, there is a preempted urgent priority for us – a ceasefire. An urgent end to the violence worth more than anything else to give us a chance to progress.”

President Ghani called on every member of the General Assembly and the P5 to “help us archive the instate of a sovereign united and democratic Afghanistan in peace within itself and the region.”

He continued, “capable of preserving and expanding the gains of the last 19 years. A democratically stable and prosperous Afghanistan will be an example of how our collective will can overcome the turmoil and the uncertainty that define our world today.”

Earlier today, marking the UN’s 75th anniversary, Member States adopted a forward-looking political declaration which will be negotiated through an intergovernmental process on: “The future we want, the United Nations we need: reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism.”
