3. SOUNDBITE (English) Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, President of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly:
“This is a moment of reckoning for our shared planet and future. This is a time for action, ambition, equality, inclusion, and partnership. It is therefore important that in the work of the United Nations, we continue to engage and involve youths. They have shown uncommon leadership in the face of the difficulties our world faces. They have been particularly vocal regarding the climate and social justice, and we must listen to them as our lives depend on this.”

5. Wide shot, Bozkir at the rostrum
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Volkan Bozkir, President-Elect of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly:
“It is our responsibility to strengthen people’s faith in multilateral cooperation and international institutions, with the UN at their center. We need to continue a frank, transparent and results-oriented dialogue about what went wrong in our efforts to contain the virus and what we have to do to avoid a similar situation in the future. We will also need to ask and answer questions about how COVID-19 vaccines can be distributed fairly and equitably. This is not just a question of health and economics, but of ethics in the most profound way.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Guterres, Secretary-general of the United Nations:
“Virtual participation may mean that a record number of Heads of States and Government take part in High-Level week but going online will undoubtedly create new challenges. We will need to learn as we go and continue to demonstrate the greatest flexibility. I look forward to working with you all, under the Presidency of His Excellency Mr. Volkan Bozkir, to make the 75thsession a success. The world looks to the United Nations as the indispensable forum for international cooperation on global challenges. Let us continue our work together to beat the pandemic and build a better future.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Volkan Bozkir, President-Elect of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly:
“Without having physical meetings, I don’t think UN can be followed throughout the world through virtual meetings. I came from abroad and I had a chance to visit some countries and meet with the UN staff, UN people risking their lives around the world and all of the feelings is that must have and continue with physical meetings. My hope is – taking care of medical requirements and respecting what our medical circles tell us to do, I hope we will be able to continue with physical meetings in the future as well.”

STORYLINE:

Closing the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, its outgoing president Tijjani Muhammad-Bande said “this is a moment of reckoning for our shared planet and future,” and praised youth for its “uncommon leadership in the face of the difficulties our world faces.”

The UN General Assembly on Tuesday held a meeting that ended its 74th and opened the 75th session.

Wrapping a year of his chairmanship of the UN Body, president Tijjani Muhammad-Bande of Nigeria said “this is a moment of reckoning for our shared planet and future.

The President of the 75th session will be Volkan Bozkir, a Turkish diplomat. Taking the oath of office, Bozkir said “it is our responsibility to strengthen people’s faith in multilateral cooperation and international institutions, with the UN at their center.”

“We need to continue a frank, transparent and results-oriented dialogue about what went wrong in our efforts to contain the virus and what we have to do to avoid a similar situation in the future,” Bozkir said. “We will also need to ask and answer questions about how COVID-19 vaccines can be distributed fairly and equitably. This is not just a question of health and economics, but of ethics in the most profound way.”

The ceremonial ending of one and opening of the following session of the UN General Assembly traditionally takes place one week before the General Debate, the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN complex on the New York’s East River.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic however, this year’s Debate will be mostly virtual.
“Virtual participation may mean that a record number of Heads of States and Government take part in High-Level week but going online will undoubtedly create new challenges,” the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. We will need to learn as we go and continue to demonstrate the greatest flexibility.”

The Secretary-General also said that “the world looks to the United Nations as the indispensable forum for international cooperation on global challenges.”

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the President-Elect Bozkir said “without having physical meetings, I don’t think UN can be followed throughout the world,” adding “my hope is – taking care of medical requirements and respecting what our medical circles tell us to do, I hope we will be able to continue with physical meetings in the future as well.”
