STORYLINE:

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi visited Jordan and Luminus Technical University College where vocational education is giving refugees in Jordan a second chance to achieve their dreams.

Waleed, a 28-year-old Yemeni refugee from Sana’a takes part in a class as part of the Hybrid Mechanics Diploma at Luminus Technical University College in Amman, Jordan alongside fellow refugee and Jordanian student.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Waleed, Yemeni refugee:
“I used to feel despair because I had reached 26-27 and hadn’t completed my education.”

He fled Yemen in 2017, with his brother, mother and grandmother and was forced to drop out of university where he was in his third year of a media studies degree.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Waleed, Yemeni refugee:
“Education is very important for young refugees to become self-reliant.”

With only three percent of refugees globally able to access higher education, Technical University College provides vocational training and diplomas for refugee youth alongside their Jordanian counterparts and is one of the few institutes to offer equal learning opportunities for all nationalities of refugees. Their programmes range from short skills-development courses to 5-year bachelor’s degrees..

SOUNDBITE (English) Fillipo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees:
“It is a project that has multiple advantages. First of all, it gives many young people – nationals and refugees – skills to acquire jobs. In fact, they help them get these jobs; they match skills with employment opportunities. But it is also a phenomenal instrument through which refugees – and Jordan is one of the biggest refugee-hosting countries in the world – can be included in the economy during the time in which they are compelled to live away from their homes.”

Currently, close to 1,800 refugee students are enrolled in the school. UNHCR is supporting scholarships for 29 refugees of different nationalities as well as 29 Jordanians.
