STORYLINE:

Refugees at the Innovation Lab in Za’atari refugee camp have designed a robot prototype made from LEGOs which automatically dispenses sanitiser, so people don’t have to touch the bottle. Their aim is to help prevent coronavirus and contribute towards the global effort to control the disease.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Marwan, Syrian refugee trainer at Za’atari Innovation Lab:
‘’We made this robot to contribute, as refugees. We want to be part of the fight against coronavirus.’’

It was built at the innovation lab inside the camp by Marwan and other refugees studying robotics.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Marwan, Syrian refugee trainer at Za’atari Innovation Lab:
‘’The aim of making this robot is to serve the local and refugee community in Za’atari camp, and to make it available outside the camp locally and in all of Jordan.”

Marwan hopes his invention will lead to more innovation to showcase the talents of refugees

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Marwan, Syrian refugee trainer at Za’atari Innovation Lab:
‘’Even people with robotics experience, they asked us about the design and the programming of this robot, and we as refugees, as humans, must help and so we offered them this information and they then made more than one robot.”
.
The Syrian innovators are part of a group of refugees who were trained in robotics at the Jubilee Center for Excellence in Education in Jordan, they then took their skills to the innovation lab inside the camp where they teach other refugees robotics and they innovate together to come up with practical solutions for the benefit of people inside and outside the camp. The team’s efforts have not gone unnoticed with interest in their innovation coming from beyond the camp’s borders.
