The Security Council today (10 March) unanimously adopted a resolution welcoming “the significant steps towards ending the war and opening the door to intra-Afghan negotiations” enabled by the Joint Declaration between Afghanistan and the United States.”

The resolution, sponsored by the United States, urges the Afghan Government to advance the peace process, including by participating in intra-Afghan negotiations through a “diverse and inclusive negotiating team composed of Afghan political and civil society leaders, including women.”

Taking the floor after the vote, US Ambassador Cherith Norman Chalet, said “this is a hopeful moment, but it is only the beginning. The United States is conscious of the long-held desire of the Afghan people for peace. And as we have in the past, we will continue to support the goal of a lasting peace in Afghanistan.”

Also speaking after the vote, Ambassador Karen Pierce of the United Kingdom said, “Afghanistan today stands at a critical juncture. The joint declaration made by the US and the government of Afghanistan on the 29th of February and the agreement between the US and the Taliban together mark a significant moment in the pursuit of peace. And now is the moment for all parties to seize this opportunity for peace by entering into direct and fully inclusive intra Afghanistan negotiations.”

The agreement between the US and the Taliban calls for the insurgent group to participate in intra-Afghan peace talks. It also covers a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops.
