United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres paid tribute to his predecessor Javier Perez de Cuéllar, who passed away at the age of 100 on Wednesday (04 Mar).

In a message today (6 Mar), Guterres said the late Secretary-General “was an accomplished statesman, a committed diplomat and a personal inspiration who left a profound impact on the United Nations and our world.

“As Secretary-General, he played a major role in bringing peace and hope to trouble spots around the world,” Guterres said, offering his deepest condolences. “We remember and mourn the passing of a remarkable and compassionate global leader who left our world a far better place,” he added.

Born in Lima on 19 January 1920, Perez de Cuellar held a number of ambassadorships for his country, including Switzerland, the then-Soviet Union, Poland and Venezuela, serving also as Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He was also appointed to senior UN roles in Cyprus and Afghanistan.

In 1982, his 10 years at the helm of the Organization concluded in 1991 with the historic El Salvador peace accords.
