STORYLINE:

United Nations top security official Gilles Michaud arrived today (5 Dec) in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, to assess the security situation in the North Kivu province, especially regarding the Ebola response.

The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security Gilles Michaud met the UN Emergency Ebola Response Coordinator David Gressly, as well as the governor of the North Kivu province, Carly Nzanzu Kasivita. The main topic of the meetings was the situation in Beni where recent clashes seriously disrupted efforts in containing the Ebola outbreak.

“I believe that the strength of the partnership and the cooperation between the government, MONUSCO and the United Nations is very important and that is the message I received this morning,” said Michaud, after the meeting with Congolese officials.

Michaud also met with the team from the World Health Organization (WHO) fighting the Ebola Virus Disease on the ground.
