STORYLINE:

Nepalese troops serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, UNMISS, have been deployed to Maper region where the Manuer and Gak communities had been fighting for days in a spate of revenge attacks, resulting in over 70 deaths and more than 100 injuries.

The Gak people of Aloor County gather to listen to local authorities and the UN peacekeeping mission staff.

They are seeking ways to manage the aftermath of the clashes between them and their neighbours from the Manuer community.

After a candid exchange, the UNMISS Force Commander asks the Gak chief what message he should take to the Manuer community when he meets them.

SOUNDBITE (Dinka) Manyiel Lieny, Paramount Chief, Gak Community:
“Go and tell them that even though we have some grievances, now that you have come to us, we have stopped the fighting.”

In a bid to deter further violence from occurring between these two warrying communities, seventy-five Nepalese peacekeepers serving with UNMISS have been temporarily redeployed from Rumbek to Maper.

SOUNDBITE (English) Lt. Gen. Shailesh Tinaikar, UNMISS Force Commander:
“We have found out that our presence has made a difference and for the next few days we shall make sure that we have permanent presence here. We will do an outreach to bring in a sense of calm and peace and create confidence for a peaceful settlement of all disputes.”

In the last three days, the guns have gone silent and all stakeholders, including the two warrying communities and their leadership, Western Lakes authorities, and UNMISS, are keeping their fingers crossed that this relative calm is sustained.

Last year, the peacekeeping mission held a peace dialogue that sought to bring about peaceful co-existence between these two Pakam communities. The resolutions reached held for some time but in less than a year, the centre broke loose. Now, the mission’s Rumbek field office is re-strategizing on how to make a more meaningful peace pact between these two chronically warrying communities.

SOUNDBITE (English) Leopold Kouassi, Acting Head of UNMISS, Rumbek Field Office:
“We need to have in-depth discussions, ensuring that long-standing grievances are brought to the table and together with the communities and the authorities ensure that this time round the resolutions reached are to be thoroughly implemented”
