“We should never forget that when refugees come to a country like Zambia, the first impacted is the local community. They have to share meagre resources, land, wood and of course it is tough, but we have spoken to many people both from the community and refugees and they have told us that they live in harmony together.”

“We will continue to invest both in the emergency short term response, it is clear that here we need more resources for sanitation for example but, also I think we need to invest a little bit in the longer term. There is a problem of access to power and connectivity in this area, maybe we can work together with development actors to try and improve conditions for everybody, both refugees host communities alike. This is the spirit of this new approach that we are promoting here.”

“The most important thing is to address the causes that push these people who leave their homes and the main cause in this case is conflict. So we really need to ask the international community to focus on peace in Congo and to a political process there that allows Congo to bring to an end all the tensions that cause the displacement of these people. There are Congolese people here in Mantapala but there are other Congolese refugees in other parts of Zambia. There are almost 900,000 Congolese refugees in all the countries neighbouring Congo.”

STORYLINE:

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi thanked Zambia for its generosity and openness in hosting refugees and called for more development support for hosting communities.

According to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), Zambia hosts over 84,000 refugees mainly from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Rwanda and Burundi.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi spent two days in the country meeting government leaders, partners and refugees.

Zambia has embraced the Global Compact on Refugees, setting up settlements where refugees and hosts live side by side and share resources.

He called for increased support in responding to the humanitarian situation as well as economic and social development.
