STORYLINE:

Koat Reath is a South Sudanese refugee in Ethiopia, but also a teacher who believes that education is the key to a brighter future in his homeland - and wants to make sure the young and old are ready to take part in rebuilding it.

The classes are overcrowded, there are not enough textbooks, but Koat Reath does not complain.

With almost a decade of teaching under his belt, Koat Reath knows a thing or two about holding his students’ attention, but this can be difficult in Jewi refugee camp where more than 100 children are crammed into one classroom at any time.

Luckily, this 41-year-old South Sudanese refugee teacher has energy levels that easily match those of the children in his class with whom he shared a difficult past. He is one of over 2 million refugees from South Sudan - currently Africa’s largest refugee crisis. Over 60 percent of those displaced are children - an entire generation whose only chance at a better future is education.

Resources are limited, classes are overcrowded and daily challenges including trauma in children, not having clothes to wear and enough food to eat are enormous. Teachers like Koat, who are also refugees are doing their part to safeguard the future of their nation’s children.
