STORYLINE:
The traditional luncheon held each year with heads of State and government from around the world featured an exchange of toasts by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the United States, the host country, Donald J. Trump.

Guterres said, “I would like to raise my glass to the hospitality, warm hospitality, of our host city and host country, New York and the United States, and to the well-being and prosperity of we the peoples of the world.”

For his part, Trump said, “I think the United Nations is an institution with more potential than virtually any institution I can think of. It’s called the potential of war, which is bad, and peace, which is great. And I think we’ve been doing a great job on the peace aspect of it.”

The luncheon is held every year in conjunction with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly debate, which brings together scores of leaders from around the world to discuss the major issues on the international agenda.
