STORYLINE:

Voicing solidarity with climate marches worldwide, United Nations staff members today (20 Sep) gathered outside of the Organization’s New York Headquarters to declare their commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.

Participants expressed support for a major Climate Action Summit being convened by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. Set to open on 23 September, it will involve world leaders as well as prominent individuals from civil society, the private sector, local activists and others committed to a more sustainable future.

Luis Alfonso de Alba, Special Envoy for 2019 Climate Summit, said “The Secretary-General has asked all Member States to come with plans, not with speeches, and he has followed upon that request by asking each of them to be very concrete and to gain a slot, if you want, on the list of speakers.”

On behalf of the Staff Union, Coralie Tripier said, “The personnel of the United Nations that we represent are fully ready to deliver on the mandate provided by Member States. We’re willing, and able, to take all necessary actions in order to address the climate emergency.”

The Summit is expected to put forward ambitious plans outlined in the landmark Paris Agreement. A special climate summit for youth on Saturday, the first of its kind, will bring young leaders and innovators together to further address the climate emergency.
