“During this session, I urge all Member States to share their experiences on poverty eradication, especially on how improved social protection systems can benefit vulnerable people, who are most affected by poverty. I request to you all to focus on how best to strengthen UN system, to ensure that the most vulnerable escape the debilitating web of poverty and hunger through sharing of knowledge on sustainable food production systems, relevant agricultural practices, availability of productive and affordable agricultural machinery, and expansion of entrepreneurial capacity.”

At the opening of the 74th Session of the General Assembly, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the Assembly is a “unique and indispensable forum where the world can come together to advance on sensitive and important issues.”

Addressing the General Assembly today (17 Sep), the Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated, “it is vital that the world has strong and effective multilateral institutions and architecture, and that international relations are based on international law.”

He added, “we are and we will remain an intergovernmental organization. At the same time, we need forms of more intense cooperation with other international and regional organizations – a networked multilateralism – as well as closer contacts with businesses, civil society and other stakeholders – an inclusive multilateralism.”

The UN chief stated, “a networked and inclusive multilateralism will help us overcome the challenges of our current era.”

Also addressing the General Assembly, the new President of its 74th session, Nigerian Ambassador Tijjani Muhammad-Bande urged all Member States to “share their experiences on poverty eradication, especially on how improved social protection systems can benefit vulnerable people, who are most affected by poverty.”

He said, “I request to you all to focus on how best to strengthen UN system, to ensure that the most vulnerable escape the debilitating web of poverty and hunger through sharing of knowledge on sustainable food production systems, relevant agricultural practices, availability of productive and affordable agricultural machinery, and expansion of entrepreneurial capacity.”

The priorities of the new session of the General Assembly will be promotion of peace and security, particularly, conflict prevention; increased partnerships for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly, poverty eradication, zero hunger and quality education; quality education, climate change, and inclusion.

The 74th session of the General Assembly opens on Tuesday, 17 September. All 193 Member States of the Organization are represented in the General Assembly - one of the six main organs of the UN - to discuss and work together on a wide array of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations, such as development, peace and security, international law, and more.
