STORYLINE:

The Force Commander for the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said plans for Government and opposition forces to work together in Unity State are “an excellent move” and hoped that the forces would be joined soon.

Lt. Gen. Shailesh Sadashiv Tinaikar and an UNMISS convoy recently visited the Unity region. After pushing and maneuvering their way out, the trip brings them to a cantonment site in Ding Ding – an area held by the opposition.

Tinaikar met with commanders from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition, (SPLM IO) seeking to know more about how they are implementing the military provisions of the peace agreement.

SOUNDBITE (English) Lt. Gen. Shailesh Sadashiv Tinaikar, Force Commander, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):
“IO and SSPDF have planned to work together. That is an excellent move. As of now, here the IO has not yet come up and joined up with the SSPDF, but I do hope that they come and do so in the near future.”

Another short drive brought the delegation to Nhialdu, where a conversation on security in the area took place with the authorities. Nhialdu was the scene of reported acts of sexual violence last year.

SOUNDBITE (English) William Chieng Dadar, Commissioner, Pawel County:
“For the cattle raiding and raping of women, we have put some forces on the road to protect our civilians. Together with IO commanders, we are working together. We put our forces of SSPDF and IO forces to protect our civilians.”

At the height of the civil war, heavy fighting took place in this area, with the town of Bentiu changing hands several times between government and opposition forces.

Since taking office as the new Force Commander of the UN Mission in South Sudan, Lt. General Shalesh Tinaikar has been visiting different parts of the country to assess the security situation.

SOUNDBITE (English) Lt. Gen. Shailesh Sadashiv Tinaikar, Force Commander, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):
“My first [goal] was to have a good view of the cantonment process which is currently underway. My second [goal] was to of course come down to Nhialdu and go down the road from Bentiu to Nhialdu – this was a scene of considerable crime, particularly against women, reported in December 2018; and of course, to meet the leadership – both the military and civil leadership in Nhialdu as well as in Bentiu.”

UNMISS said, with the peace agreement signed in Addis Ababa a year ago, political violence has significantly diminished, allowing for military forces to move to cantonment sites in readiness for the unification of the army.
