And at the same time, we realized that jobs are not available here, and we thought such projects should be able to engage the youth in productive ways and that should be able to keep them busy to avoid anybody manipulating them and to some extent empower them economically.”

STORYLINE:

In the Central African Republic, United Nations peacekeepers are helping women in Birao to build peace the best way they can, working the land to feed their families and make a living.

The Farming for Peace project is an initiative by the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
Birao’s field office aims at bringing communities together while helping them with agricultural training techniques and methods that also include financial management.

With profitable results, the community has now taken over local ownership of this project, running the farm business on their own by applying the skills they learned from the Zambian Contingent based here.

Zara Hussein, expressed appreciation for the peacekeepers. She said, “They teach us good farming practice. We are also grouped in different ethnicities and MINUSCA show us how to live and work-together in socially cohesive ways. We want peace.”

A few kilometers from the farm is Birao’s open air market. Most of the women traders gather here once a week to sell their goods.

Empowered by the participation of various women groups in development projects, their contribution is appreciated, as they help inject economic security in the region.

The area’s many unemployed youths have not been left out. Acknowledging the influence armed groups have on venerable and idle youth, MINUSCA’s farming initiatives also target the youth at risk.

Over 700 youth have since cleared more than 100 acres of land and planted cassava and watermelon.

Lt. Col. Latson Ngosa, Commander Zambian Battalion, said, “The perpetrators of violence always run to the youth, if they are not engaged in a positive manner. Having sat down with the field office, we thought it wise that the people we embrace for now are the youth to the extent that once we keep them busy, they should not easily be manipulated. At the same time, we realized that jobs are not available here, and we thought such projects should be able to engage the youth in productive ways and that should be able to keep them busy to avoid anybody manipulating them and to some extent empower them economically.”

Farming for Peace one of MINUSCA’s innovative initiatives to maintain social and economic stability in the country.
