3. SOUNDBITE (English) Luis Alfonso de Alba, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the 2019 Climate Summit:
“The level of political will compare to Paris, the time we met in Paris is lower and it is something worries us, concerns us. We need to continue to work with all Member States and we need to encourage them to be full part of this solution, but certainly we need to recognise the political will is not as high as it should and it is probably the main reason to host this Summit for the General-General to make that point.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Luis Alfonso de Alba, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the 2019 Climate Summit:
“We are obviously encouraging all Member States to pay greater attention to nature, because nature can help in the solution of climate change, but also the nature needs to be protected from climate change, we are doing a lot of damage. So there is a relationship there. In the case of the recent fires, whether it was in the case of the fires in California, more recently the fires in the Amazon, the UN is ready to provide any support, any assistance that may be required in the context of our own capacities.”

In New York today (27 Aug), UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the 2019 Climate Summit briefed the reporters about the upcoming programmes of the Summit. He noted that heads of States and Government from Member States will be invited to the Summit along with civil society, businesses, organizations, youth and other representatives from the public or societies at large.

Asked about recent fires in the Amazon, De Alba said, “we are obviously encouraging all Member States to pay greater attention to nature, because nature can help in the solution of climate change, but also the nature needs to be protected from climate change, we are doing a lot of damage.”

De Alba added, “in the case of the recent fires, whether it was in the case of the fires in California, more recently the fires in the Amazon, the UN is ready to provide any support, any assistance, may be required in the context of our own capacities.”
