3. SOUNDBITE (English) Karen Pierce, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations:
“The United Kingdom, France and Germany requested this briefing we have just had from Rosemary DiCarlo about the DPRK missile launch. We requested it under AOB because we are concerned by the launches of ballistic missiles by North Korea in the past few days. We reiterate our condemnation of such launches, which are violations of UN Security Council Resolutions. We urge North Korea to take concrete steps towards its complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation and to engage in meaningful negotiations with the US as agreed between President Trump and Kim Jong Un on 30 June. Serious efforts by North Korea to re-engage diplomatically and make progress on denuclearisation are the best way to guarantee security and stability on the Korean Peninsula, as well as a brighter future for the people of North Korea. Ultimately it is the North Korean regime that is responsible for the dire situation of its people. International sanctions need to remain in place and be fully enforced until North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes are dismantled. It is vital that the Security Council shows unity in upholding its resolutions.”
