STORYLINE:

UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA) with an additional talk of addressing the escalating violence in the country’s central regions.

While the resolution 2480 did not changed the mandate of MINUSMA, it did create a second strategic priority for the mission, focusing on deteriorating security situation in the center on Mali, where a feud between ethnic Dogon and Fulani communities has already caused hundreds of civilian deaths.

French ambassador to the United Nations Francois Delattre, the penholder of the resolution 2480, said after the vote in the Council that the resolution “calls upon the Malian authorities to immediately develop a comprehensive strategy to end the violence there and ensure the return of the State.”

Delattre added that the resolution also “encourages MINUSMA to strengthen its actions in this zone, which is now elevated to the second strategic category.”

The primary focus of MINUSMA will stay on the support to the implementation of the peace agreement signed in 2015 between the government in Bamako and the various armed groups from Mali’s North. The new resolution however, “asks the mission to ensure that sufficient resources are devoted to its mandate in the Center, building on the efforts already made in recent months, notably through the development of an emergency plan for the Mopti region and the creation of a dedicated sector,” explained Delattre.
