STORYLINE:

The Technical and Scientific Police (PTS) unit of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA) is helping Malian authorities to investigate and bring to justice the perpetrators of multiple attacks throughout the country.

The work of PTS is an essential element in the criminal proceedings. The officers collect the evidence (traces, objects and clues) on the crime scene and then analyze them in the laboratory. This serves to identify the perpetrator or perpetrators of a crime.

“The work of the Technical and Scientific Police is clearly written into part of the MINUSMA mandate that is addressing fighting impunity’” said captain Geoffrey Chenais. “So, the laboratory is working every day with the goal of helping the Malian justice system to fight impunity.”

The PTS unit of MINUSMA works closely with the Malian authorities, through the support it provides to the investigators of MINUSMA.

Captain Chenais explained: “We also assist the Human Rights Division of the MINUSMA especially on the village attacks that happened recently central Mali. The goal here is to help them establish the truth of the facts and also collect the evidence which we will then transfer to Malian justice authorities.”
