STORYLINE:

A joint high-level UN - EU delegation led by the UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Deputy Secretary General of the EU Pedro Serrano is visiting Mali to take stock of progress made in the implementation of the peace agreement and help identify new pathways for sustainable peace.

On 20 June, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS) Pedro Serrano, accompanied by the Special Representative of the Secreaty General in Mali, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, travelled to Mopti for a field trip.

The purpose of this trip is to see first-hand the situation in the region and the measures taken to deal with it.

The UN-EU delegation, among others, met with authorities and local civil society, women and youth. They also visited infrastructure with the support of the United Nations, including one of five checkpoints funded by MINUSMA via Canada's contribution to the United Nations Trust Fund for Peace and Security in Mali, for a total cost of 194 million FCFA.

The delegation will be in Mali until the 21 June to exchange with the Malian authorities and key stakeholders on the way to enhance support by the UN and the European Union to accelerate the implementation of the Peace agreement and the restoration of the State authority in northern and central Mali, as well as to strengthen the partnership of the two organizations
