5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jorge Arreaza, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela:
“Let us remember, Madame President, that from this podium, sacred, from this temple of multilateralism, the President of the United States himself, in September last year announced unilateral coercive measures against my country and others. That is exclusive. That member state’s role is exclusive of multilateralism. It excludes itself from the UN Charter, from the purpose of the UN Charter.”

“Also, the Vice-President of the United States Mike Pence, just a couple of weeks ago in the Security Council, tried to not just take unilateral measures from his government to impose blockades, to impose sieges, to make peoples suffer, but he also tried to impose the United States dictatorship in this house, at the United Nations, and to give orders to member states, to – in a brazen manner – try to expel or to not-recognize the credentials of member states with full rights like Venezuela.”

STORYLINE:

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Jorge Arreaza, today (24 Apr) said, the United Nations should not be used “as a tool to intervene in the internal affairs of another state and thus seek to designate, in an illegal manner, its national authorities and diplomatic representatives.”

Addressing a General Assembly’s commemorative meeting on the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, Arreaza singled out the United States and pointed out that during last year’s General Assembly general debate, President Donald Trump “announced unilateral coercive measures against my country and others.”

By these actions, he said, the United States “excludes itself from the UN Charter, from the purpose of the UN Charter.”

Arreaza also noted that “the Vice-President of the United States Mike Pence, just a couple of weeks ago in the Security Council, tried to not just take unilateral measures from his government to impose blockades, to impose sieges, to make peoples suffer, but he also tried to impose the United States dictatorship in this house, at the United Nations, and to give orders to member states, to – in a brazen manner – try to expel or to not-recognize the credentials of member states with full rights like Venezuela.”

The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was officially designated by the General Assembly on 12 December 2018.

As emphasized in the resolution, the International Day is a reaffirmation of the UN Charter and its principles of resolving disputes among countries through peaceful means. It acknowledges the use of multilateral decision-making and diplomacy in achieving peaceful resolutions to conflicts among nations.
