Description
Sadako Ogata, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Sharon Capeling-Alakija, Director of United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize and deepen the collaboration between their organizations.
Ms. Ogata indicates that the vast majority of refugees are women and children, and the goal of UNHCR is to integrate women into every aspect of their programs. She says that UNHCR will develop their assessments and program planning tools, as well as conduct extensive training of their staffs, in order to meet the needs of refugee women. And she states that UNHCR will help refugee women to be self-supporting for reintegration.
Ms. Capeling-Alakija emphasizes the necessity of taking gender into account in the process of solving refugee problems, though UNIFEM knows various factors, such as peace and security, refugee shelters and economic rehabilitation, should place before drawing attention to women concerns.
