STORYLINE:

The World Food Programme (WFP) said that, as of 8 April, it has reached 717,000 people in Mozambique who were affected by cyclone Idai, while the total number of people impacted by the flood and in need of assistance (HRP) in the country is about 1.8 million.

WFP intends to assist 1.7 million of the 1.8 million Mozambicans in need of emergency food assistance. Many have lost everything: their homes, belongings, crops and livelihoods. Food is scarce in local markets, and prices of staples are rising rapidly.

SOUNDBITE (Sena) Virginia Jone, local resident:
“Today, is the first time I received food. Until now, I was only eating what my daughters and grandchildren had received in assistance after losing their homes.”

The floods greatly impacted the crops. In Nsanje, the floods affected 12,759 hectares (ha) of crops (out of 43,496 ha cultivable land).

SOUNDBITE (English) Lola Castro, Regional Director, World Food Programme (WFP):
“They lost all their harvest, all their maize, all their groundnuts, all their cassava. It has been flooded or destroyed by the winds and then also it has been basically totally wet by the big waters that rose. So now the people are thinking -please we need food.”

Leading the global humanitarian logistics “cluster” that helps coordinate the relief effort, WFP has deployed to Beira three MI-8 transport helicopters and a C-295 freight aircraft to support the broader humanitarian response. They are being used to move food, water, medicines, tents and other essentials, as well as humanitarian personnel. As more roads become accessible, the aircraft fleet will be reduced. Two amphibious vehicles (Sherps), each with a capacity of 1,000 kilos of cargo, are now bringing WFP food to otherwise inaccessible locations.

WFP says that 15 districts have been impacted in Malawi by cyclone Idai, with over to 868,000 people affected including about 732,000 in need of assistance.

At least 56 people have died, and 672 have been injured. 86,976 displaced people are currently reported in over 173 camp sites but people are currently going back to their homes.

WFP is helping affected families in planting of other crops such as sweet potatoes and vegetables as soon as water subsides to utilize the residual moisture is urgently needed. Although markets are functioning, and food stocks are available, commodity prices increased significantly after the floods.

WFP’s coordinated operation is supported by both vehicles, and boats for the distribution of food, transportation of relief items, shelter construction materials including poles, iron sheets and cement in the targeted areas.

As of April 8, WFP has reached 165,000 people as of 8 April, distributing 1,400 mt of food. The Organization is planning to reach 414,000 people by the end of April. Logistics coordination hub has been established in Blantyre with a dedicated Logistics Sector Coordinator and Information Management.
