Description
The theme of the 52nd session of the Commission on Population and Development (1 - 5 April 2019) is:

Review and appraisal of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and its contribution to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development integrated the global consensus on interlinkages between population and development, building on international frameworks that preceded it.

Attaining the goals and objectives of the Programme of Action and the 2030 Agenda is a shared responsibility that includes ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health care, protecting reproductive rights, ending poverty, advancing education, ensuring decent work for all, reducing social and economic inequalities and ensuring sustainable patterns of consumption and production. Meeting the demand for resources from a growing and more prosperous population, while protecting the environment and combating climate change, remains a central challenge.

Policies and programmes for sustainable development should be grounded in an understanding of population dynamics, including changes in population size or age structure and processes of migration or urbanization.
