STORYLINE:

More than 200 Nepalese peacekeepers have been awarded medals in recognition of their service to the people of South Sudan and the United Nations. The colourful award ceremony took place today (21 Jan) at the UN Mission base in the South Sudanese capital, Juba.

These Nepalese peacekeepers have been serving in South Sudan for close to a year and today, their efforts are being recognized by the United Nations.

It was the crowning moment for a job well done.

SOUNDBITE (English) Unaisi Vuniwaqa, UN Police Commissioner, UNMISS:
“I’m impressed with the dedication of the contingents, the discipline, and the commitment to the work that they do on a daily basis – especially, in discharging the mandated task that is required of us, on the protection of civilians here in South Sudan.”

It was a message echoed by David Shearer, the head of the UN Mission in South Sudan, special guest at the ceremony.

It was a solemn moment and a time of pride for these Nepalese peacekeepers who have given a part of their lives to serving the people of South Sudan
