STORYLINE:

Following a surge in sexual attacks on local women and girls in Bentiu, South Sudan, the head of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) David Shearer, said “our human rights team have launched an investigation, gathering victim and witness testimony and working to identify those responsible for the attacks.”

The Special representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan also reiterated the efforts being made by the Mission to prevent sexual violence in Bentiu after a surge in attacks on local women and girls.

Shearer told reporters Tuesday (11 Dec) in capital Juba “these attacks are absolutely despicable, and the perpetrators must be held to account. Our team in Bentiu responded immediately by sending additional patrols to the affected areas. We are cutting down foliage along the roads so that the perpetrators cannot conceal their presence so easily.”

He announced that the UNMISS Human Rights team has “launched an investigation, gathering victim and witness testimony and working to identify those responsible for the attacks.”

The mission has also met with local authorities who have primary responsibility for protecting civilians and has urged armed forces to guarantee command and control over their troops to ensure rogue elements are not involved in the criminal acts.
