STORYLINE:

A ceremony was held in Gao, the main city in the north of Mali, for the official launch of the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) program in the country.

Planned in the Algiers peace agreement signed in 2015, this program allows veteran fighters of the armed groups that signed the agreement to surrender their weapons and join the regular army or benefit from a program to support reintegration into a civilian life, including through vocational training programs.

SOUNDBITE (French) Zahabi Ould Sidi Mohamed, president of National Commission for DDR:
“this segment today is the official launch, a launch which has a great significance because there are all members of movements who are signatories of the agreement who are there, supporting the process by their presence here.”

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the government, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-general (DSRSG), Mbaranga Gasarabwe, and leaders of armed groups.

SOUNDBITE (French) Mbaranga Gasarawe, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-general (DSRSG), Mbaranga Gasarabwe:
“This is an historical moment, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the willingness of Malians to launch this process of accelerated DDR and integration in the defense and security forces. It took a long time but you are acting at the right time.”

The launch of DDR is expected to be another important step towards the return of stability in northern Mali, a huge Sahel country still facing the jihadist threat despite more than five years of international military intervention.
